It just goes to show how careful you have to be. Not just with a scooter battery, but with any electricals. I used to have a quingo mobility scooter, and I had to call the fire brigade twice to it as I could smell burning and saw smoke coming from the back. I was riding it at the time. Luckily it didn't catch fire, but it was a fault with the wiring to the battery.

Wow what a thought indeed! I own a powerchair and charge it in my bedroom daily.

I think it was a very important and informative to show this, I had never thought of this happening but it does make sense that anything electrical and plugged into the mains can go up at any time. Well done fire brigade

If you look in the manuals of scooters, it says it can withstand humidity of 30 to 70%. That is Always IN a building, never outside or in a moisty garage or shed.

There is a difference between storing and charging, which seems to be lost on the fire department.

So many people are not listening to the audio. He said from the beginning that it was a defect in the battery charger that caused the fire.

i charge mine in a secure safe area ... but i have often thought about this as the brochure says to charge over night. those are good wheels though! with stood the fire! what model scooter was it please?

Congradulations to Dorset Fire and Rescue Service for putting this on utube. It will be an eye opener for some people. May i ask ask anyone who watched this and who has a childs battery driven toy such as a bike or a quad to remember they too have a charger to consider charging only under a fire detector as a safety precaution. And the comment from Jamie Jackson about deliberately setting a scooter on fire is ill founded, whether it was new or old is irrelevent because if it it saves ONE life be it man, woman, or child or even the life of a cat or dog 

With that big of a lithium battery being charged unattended, something bad is going to happen sooner or later.

Why are the fire service not insisting councils and builders of accommodation for disabled persons provide secure external mobility scooter storage and charging areas? Instead a lot of councils and housing assosiations are banning people from having scooters depriving them of their independence.

I notice how just about everything on that scooter burned and melted with the exception of the steel parts and of all things...THE RUBBER WHEELS??? Can you explain how everything else but steel is gone but the tires survived almost untouched?

Old lead-acid batteries are much safer than new lithium-ion batteries.

What type of fire extinguisher should be used on a mobility scooter fire? so got to buy one to have if a fire ever happens.

Most council’s are recommended by the Fire and Rescue Service not to have mobility scooters charging in communal block areas.

Away from the building ? That's ridiculous, scooters are stolen regularly and if you don't keep your scooter either in your flat or chained in the lobby ON YOUR FLOOR it won't be there in the morning. Just last week we had two stolen by some young assholes when the scooters were left out side the building. A more intelligent solution would be to make a video showing how these fires start. By the way most scooter battery chargers aren't on the vehicle they are a separate unit that plugs into the scooter via a long cable. I run my charger through an RCD i.e. a residual current device which cuts the power as soon as there's any type of electrical problem while charging. Using an RCD is good practical advice while parking the scooter outside where it will be stolen isn't good advice at all.

Strange how the wheels & tyres are undamaged

Do not charge your mobile phone in your living room. Only in special flame resistant compartment with automatic fire extinguishing system :)
